artist statement
My work is rooted in sensory perception and transformation. I move across disciplines—textiles, painting, and performance—allowing instinct and environment to guide my process. No matter the medium, I create pieces that serve as archives of metamorphosis.
My practice explores the space between meaning and illegibility. It is informed by my interest in transformation—how meaning is translated across mediums, languages, and generations. As the biracial daughter of an Asian immigrant raised in a Southern religious community, I have witnessed transformation as both a necessity and an inheritance: the physical shifts of assimilation, the spiritual shifts of faith and doubt, the unseen ways memory holds its shape.

Mothh - Amanda Tai (b. 1991, Ohio) is a queer, Taiwanese American artist living and working in New York. Mothh’s interdisciplinary practice explores themes of migration, assimilation, and transformation. Her latest moniker: Mothh, represents the artist in her present form of metamorphosis. Previous monikers include Adelaide and Lady Clementine.
Mothh's visual art, writing, and music have appeared in publications such as Wussy Magazine, Open Ears, Atlanta Magazine, and Apartment Therapy. Her music visuals have earned laurels at numerous film festivals, including a premiere at the Atlanta Film Festival.
She holds a BA from University of Georgia, completing studies in political science and international affairs abroad in Verona, Italy, and at Oxford University in Oxford, England. Recent solo exhibitions include Future Medicine, Scope Miami (2022). Group exhibitions include Upstate Art Weekend, Woodstock (2024); BaraBall, Brick Aux Gallery, Brooklyn (2024); Eureka! A Celebration, MAD Gallery, Kingston (2024).
